Different Types of Mattresses

When you are looking for a mattress, it can be hard to know which way to go. There are different types of mattresses, different levels of comfort, and different brands. So where do you start? Check out a brief overview of mattresses to give you a general understanding of what is out there.

First, there are levels of comfort:

Firm – Firm mattresses provide optimal support and have limited contour ability (meaning it does not form to your body). This comfort level is ideal for the back sleeper.

Cushion firm - Cushion firm mattresses are softer feeling than those classified as firm. You could describe it as something between hard and soft. Many people prefer cushion firm because it has the support of firm with a little extra padding.

Plush – Plush is the softest of the comfort levels. It has improved contour ability and molds to body. With a build in soft top, it adds suppleness and elasticity.

Then there are mattress types:

Innerspring – Innerspring mattresses are the most common on the market. They have a steel coil support system with a layer of padding. This mattress type has a wide variety to choose from and differing ranges of firmness, fluffiness of pillow top and price. Innerspring mattresses are great for support.

Memory Foam - Memory Foam mattresses consist of high density polyurethane foam as a support system. It molds to the shape of your body providing optimal support. It also absorbs movement. We all remember the infomercials where they put a glass of wine at one side of the bed and have someone jump on the other end to see if it spills. There are also several types of memory foam– gel, plant based and traditional.

Hybrid – Hybrid mattresses have both a steel coil support and a memory foam or latex layering. It is a hybrid of innerspring and memory foam. Hybrids also contour the body and provide a unique feel. By having the support of memory form with the innerspring bounce, hybrids provide the best of both worlds.
